The rough is the area of longer grass that borders the fairway and green. It is designed to penalize shots that miss the fairway by making it harder to advance the ball.
Types of Rough
- First cut (intermediate rough): Slightly longer than fairway grass
- Primary rough: Significantly longer, making clean contact difficult
- Deep rough (cabbage): Very long grass, often requiring a strong wedge to escape
