A mulligan is an informal practice where a golfer is allowed to replay a shot without penalty, most commonly after a poor tee shot. Mulligans are not allowed under the official Rules of Golf and are only used in casual play.

The origin of the term is debated, but it is most commonly attributed to David Bernard Mulligan, a Canadian golfer who reportedly re-teed after a poor drive at the St. Lambert Country Club in Montreal in the 1920s.
